One Step At A Time
I want to share with you this story that truly inspired me.
THE FERN AND THE BAMBOO
One day I decided to quit... I quit my job, my relationship, my spirituality... I wanted to quit my life. I went to the woods to have one last talk with God.
"God", I said. "Can you give me one good reason not to quit?"
His answer surprised me...
"Look around", He said. "Do you see the fern and the bamboo?"
"Yes", I replied.
"When I planted the fern and the bamboo seeds, I took very good care of them. I gave them light. I gave them water. The fern quickly grew from the earth Its brilliant green covered the floor. Yet nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo. In the second year the Fern grew more vibrant and plentiful. And again, nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo." He said.
"In the third year, there was still nothing from the bamboo seed. But I would not quit. In the fourth year, again, there was nothing from the bamboo seed. I would not quit." He said.
"Then in the fifth year a tiny sprout emerged from the earth. Compared to the fern it was seemingly small and insignificant... But just 6 months later the bamboo rose to over 100 feet tall. It had spent the five years growing roots. Those roots made it strong and gave it what it needed to survive. I would not give any of my creations a challenge it could not handle." He said to me.
"Did you know, my child, that all this time you have been struggling, you have actually been growing roots? I would not quit on the bamboo. I will never quit on you. Don't compare yourself to others." He said.
"The bamboo had a different purpose than the fern. Yet, they both make the forest beautiful. Your time will come", God said to me. "You will rise high!"
"How high should I rise?" I asked.
"How high will the bamboo rise?" He asked in return.
"As high as it can?" I questioned.
"Yes." He said, "Give me glory by rising as high as you can."

These past few months I've been contemplating on what to do with my career and on how to live my life to the fullest. I nearly went mad while considering these options:
Option #1: take my software career to the next level. (pros: it's interesting plus it's where the money is; cons: it's brain-draining and i will need years of experience)
Option #2: teach math, physics, or any EE course. (pros: i love math and i can teach; con: i need to be extra-hardworking to really earn)
Option #3: ditch engineering. master the piano then make a living out of it. (pro: i love music; cons: i will need years of practice and artists do starve unless they are popular)
Option #4: learn photography and interior design then make a living out of it. (pro: i love arts; cons: same as option #3 plus i will need a lumpsome of funds and there are no interior design courses offered here in the Phils.)
Finally I decided that I need to make a living out of option #1 and just make a hobby out of options #3 and #4 (thanks to Rohel's counseling). Then I may eventually put up a business so I can have the luxury of quality time. As of now I have planned on taking things one step at a time:
Upgrade #1: It's official. My resignation is effective on the 28th of February. I've already updated my resume (as Armi adviced) and applied to companies with interesting job descriptions for the position of software/firmware engineer.
Upgrade #2: I'll be taking a formal one-month training in C++ Programming this March in the Meralco Foundation Institute. And while I'm staying at home unemployed I will study analog/digital circuits/devices, review my Visual Basic programming skills, and continue my neglected piano practices. I'm dead serious.
Upgrade #3: I plan on taking another short-course at MFI, probably a Java programming or a Programmable Logic Controller course.
There. I have finally steered the wheel of my life into the direction I currently want to take (of course it may still change with time).
